The scheme involved Gyges sneaking into the royal chambers in the evening and hiding behind a door while waiting for the queen to arrive. It would be bedtime once she came, so she would get naked, change into PJs and crawl into bed. After seeing her naked, and once she was asleep, he would sneak back out of the room to go masturbate in the royal water closet.

Unfortunately, The queen caught a glimpse of Gyges as he made his escape and swore revenge. She called Gyges to her quarters the following morning and presented him with two options.
